Stabbed to Death and Set on Fire

It has been a long time since one single sentence spoken by a single newsreader has had this much of an impact on me. To be honest, I am absolutely shocked.

Two French students who were on a trip to London were tied up in their hotel, gagged and murdered. How disgusting is that. The idea that people can do this to each other is not only sad and upsetting, but appalling.

Laurent Bonomo, 23, was stabbed 196 times. Over 100 of those wer in his back after he was already dead. His friend, Gariel Ferez, also 23, was stabbed 47 times. Judging from the number of times each of the young students were stabbed, it would suggest that this was not random. This screams of passion and hate. But so far, nobody seems to know why this happened or who is responsible.

The pair were studying at the Imperial College London and had only been in the UK since May. They were due to go home this month and even though I did not know them, I really wish they had gone home earlier and that I had never heard of them.

Their facebook profiles have had a lot of traffic since their deaths, with friends leaving tributes and everybody seeming to regard them both as highly as is possible. They appear to be well liked. They had no criminal records and were playing video games when they were attacked seemingly out of nowhere, seemingly for no reason.

A man has turned up with burns on his hands. Obviously for defamation and contempt reasons, police cannot link him specifically to the murders, but I hope that the truth comes out and that whoever is responsible for their tragic and horrific deaths gets brought to justice. Nothing that our judicial system can do to punish this killer will ever be enough to balance the deaths of these two bright young men.
